Updates to the emergency food hamper program

  1. Please call 403-253-2055 to request your essential food hamper. The phone line is open 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. You must call first as hamper distribution is by appointment only.

  2. Be prepared: we will ask some personal questions like income and basic expenses, including rent, mortgage, utilities, childcare and medical.
  3. Once you have called and been approved for a food hamper, our volunteers will book a you a specific time to pick-up your hamper. Hampers can be picked-up at our main location or one of our satellite locations.
  4. We have switched to a drive-thru model of hamper distribution. Please make room in your vehicle BEFORE you arrive, ideally your trunk. Stay in your vehicle and present your ID at the window. This is critical to ensure safe distances for you, the staff and volunteers, and stop the spread of this virus.
  5. If you don’t have a car, we have safe walk-up hamper distribution. Please follow the direction of the volunteers.
  6. It is extremely important that you arrive only at your assigned pick-up time!

What you need to know

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I do when the request line is busy?

During peak times, you may have to call back or wait on the line. The food bank only takes hamper request through the Hamper Request Line. We cannot process hamper requests from Facebook messages or voicemails on administration lines. Please see above for Hamper Request Line hours.

Please be patient, we’ll get to you as soon as we can!

Can I still qualify if I have received a hamper before?

Eligible clients in crisis may receive up to seven emergency hampers in a 12-month period. The first three hampers may be received through self-referral, while the last four require a referral from one of our agency partners. There must be a 30-day gap between requests. Most of our clients come less than three times in their lifetime.

What is a referral?

A referral comes from a social or community partner agency. The Hamper Request Line volunteers will provide you with more information and potential agency contacts.

When is the best time to call?

The best time of day to call is between 3:30 and 7 pm, Monday through Thursday.

Can I pre-book a hamper?

Yes, you can call ahead and book a hamper up to 5 days before the day you want to pick-up your hamper.

How do I get my hamper home if I don't have a car?

Bus Route 30 runs directly behind our building. The stop is at the corner of 46 Ave and 12A St SE. See the schedule.

You may also request a pick-up closer to your home from one of our depot locations. Find a community depot near you.

How do I get the hampers home on the bus?

We encourage you to bring duffle bags, suitcases with wheels or other large carrying cases to transport your hamper.

Can I pick up food closer to my home?

The Food Bank has community satellite locations located throughout the city so you can pick-up your hamper closer to your home. Our depots are open on certain days and times of the week. Check out the hours of operation and locations of our satellite locations.

What kind of ID should I bring?

There are no lineups, and volunteer can help you get your food to your vehicle.

Parking is free at most of our satellite locations (the only one that isn’t is Carter Place).

Most of our satellite locations are accessible, the only location that isn’t accessible is the Foothills United Church location.

What is the hamper content at a satellite location?

Hampers are our satellite locations are the same size and include a similar variety of perishable items as our main location. You will still receive a hamper with 7 days of food for each person. Our specialty hampers (renal, celiac, baby) can also be picked up at any satellite location.

Are the satellite locations Accessible?

Most of our satellite locations are accessible, the only location that isn’t accessible is the Foothills United Church location.

What if I can't take all my food at a satellite location?

If there is food that you can’t eat or take with you, you can leave these items with the satellite location volunteers and we will ensure that another family will be able to use it.

Please notify us if you need to cancel, you will not be penalized and the food will be provided to another family.

Do the satellite locations work with other Agencies?

Many of our satellite locations have social services onsite or work with other agencies nearby that provide services.

Did you know? 68% of all hampers at our satellite locations are referrals from Agencies.
