Social Research Assistant – Summer Students

The Calgary Food Bank is seeking two summer students to join our Client Services Team! The Social Research Assistants will plan, design and manage a research project supporting the Calgary Food Bank’s research goals and priorities.

Primary responsibilities

  • Using an appropriate methodology to design and manage a research project, which may involve the use of quantitative and/or qualitative methods.
  • Designing questionnaires.
  • Applying a variety of research techniques to gather relevant information, including document analysis, surveys, case studies and interviews (face-to-face, telephone and online).
  • Conducting information and data retrieval searches using electronic databases.
  • Analyzing and evaluating research and interpreting data from diverse data sets.
  • Design and conduct literature reviews and summarize findings in reports and presentations.
  • Offer research expertise for other ongoing research projects and program evaluation activities.
  • Produce evidence-based interpretation and produce research communications (fact sheets, reports, data visualizations, presentations).

Education and experience required

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Business/Management, Statistics, Economics, Sociology or other relevant discipline.
  • Working knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative research tools.
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office including Office 365 with an emphasis in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with data analysis.
  • Well organized and high attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience in creating infographics and posters using visual design websites.
  • Experience in conducting surveys using online platforms.
  • Experience in predictive modeling and/or Machine Learning.
  • Experience in using statistical programming language (SQL, R, or Python) and in using qualitative data analysis software (such as NVivo) would be beneficial.

Warehouse and Logistics Associate– Summer Students

The Calgary Food Bank is seeking two summer students to join our Logistics and Inventory Team! The Warehouse and Logistics Associate will support the Calgary Food Bank’s operations with management of food donations flow through the warehouse and integrating Supply Chain Management skills and knowledge for optimum distribution.

Primary responsibilities

  • Evaluating existing channels with a view to maximizing efficiency.
  • Determining optimum inventory control strategies.
  • Skill building through logistics management.
  • Ensuring safe food handling procedures are followed.
  • Participation in safety training and certification as required, including WHMIS, forklift operation and procedural guidelines.

Tasks performed

  • Supervise volunteers and community service workers.
  • Pallet movement within the warehouse using power equipment.
  • Record and track inventory within the warehouse.
  • Assist in the creation of food hampers.
  • Assist in receiving and recording donations.

Education and experience required

  • You possess a professional manner and excellent communication skills to interact with all levels within the organization.
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office including Office 365.
  • Initiative to succeed in a busy and productive environment.
  • You must be able to lift a minimum of 30 lbs.
  • Power equipment experience is considered an asset.

Project assignment

Each student will be asked to complete a project relating to either logistics or inventory as it relates to the Calgary Food Bank. This project will include a written and oral presentation at the end of the job assignment.
