Covid-19 Update

Keeping the Calgary Food Bank community healthy

March 23, 2020

Things may look and feel differently at the Calgary Food Bank. Be rest assured we have worked to create precautionary measures and safety protocols that will help us meets the need of the community in the coming days and weeks.  We know that you may have many questions and concerns. Please check back or our social media channels for updates. Thank you for helping us maintain a healthy and safe environment. Please be patient as we work with an increase in emails and calls.

REQUESTING HAMPERS – 403-253-2055

  • The Hamper Request line is open. Please be patient as our phones are very busy. If your call is disconnected, please keep trying.  You must call first as emergency hamper distribution is by appointment only. Please call 403-253-2055.
  • We have implemented a drive-through model for hamper pick-up so please follow the traffic instructions. Please ensure you have room in your vehicle, ideally your trunk, for your hamper. This is critical to ensure safe distances for you, the staff and volunteers, and stop the spread of this virus.
  • If you arrive without an appointment, you may be asked to exit the line, call the hamper request line and return at your designated time slot. We understand this is not ideal but we are focusing on trying to meet the demand in an unprecedented scenario. We can do this together!
  • We are distributing hampers at limited satellite locations. Hamper distribution at these locations will not be following a drive-thru model of distribution but social distancing and other protocols have been implemented to ensure the safety of volunteers, staff, and clients.
  • If you do not have a vehicle, please let our volunteers know when you phone and they can walk you through the process. Bus Route 30 runs directly behind our building. The stop is at the corner of 46 Ave and 12A St SE. Please contact Calgary Transit to get more information, call 403-262-1000 or visit the website.
  • The hamper includes the essentials for your household. We appreciate your patience as we make sure we can feed yyc with our resources of staff, volunteers and food at this unprecedented time. We have a very limited capacity to accommodate special requests for hampers. Pet food is still being provided, based on availability. Hygiene packs and cleaning supplies requests cannot be guaranteed.

VOLUNTEERING

Things will look different at the Food Bank for the time being due to the need for social distancing to slow the spread of COVID-19. We’re calling on our vast and amazing volunteer team to help us fill necessary shifts. We are now scheduling volunteers for very specific times and roles. Visit our volunteer page for details on how you can help.

DONATIONS

We know you want to help. Here is how you can make a contribution to help feed YYC:

  • We are continuing to pick-up donations from our grocery partners. If you are out grocery shopping, why not pick up another item and leave in the donation bin right in the store.
  • We are requesting donations of our staple items from our wish list (canned goods, peanut butter, pasta, rice) and toilet paper.
  • Funds will ensure that we can purchase essential hamper items. You can make your donation online, thank you!
  • We are following AHS directions to create social distancing so we ask that you postpone your visit to our facility for the time being.

FOOD LINK

We are now moving to an order and pick-up model of food and supplies distribution. Here are some updates on the new distribution model:

  • We are working with limited staff, volunteers and resources at this time, to keep our facility safe and continue service delivery, therefore a limited number of agencies have been contacted, primarily those with certified industrial kitchens and who are cooking for their resident clients.
  • Selected agencies/programs will be contacted to notify them when they can access the Food Link Program with this new distribution model
  • Please continue to bear with us as we work through this challenge. We know that you may have many questions and concerns. Please do not hesitate to contact us with your questions using the agency line at 403-640-8810 or the Food Link team members at 403-253-2059 extension 227 or extension 230.

March 17, 2020

Thank you for your patience and understanding while we worked on implementing new protocols to safely serve the community, and keep staff and volunteers safe while doing our part to protect public health.

REQUESTING HAMPERS

The Hamper Request Line (403-253-2055) will re-open on Wednesday, March 18 and emergency hamper distribution will officially start on Thursday, March 19.

To practice social distancing protocols and to ensure the safety of our community, we are switching to a drive-thru model of hamper distribution.

  • You MUST call the Hamper Request Line (403-253-2055) first so that we can organize your emergency food hamper and assign your pick-up time. Please be patient as we expect larger call volumes.
  • It is extremely important that you arrive only at your assigned pick-up time!
  • If you arrive earlier than the assigned time you will be asked to move back in the queue.
  • If you later than the assigned time, you will be asked to reschedule for another time.

March 12, 2020

As Calgary experiences increased concerns regarding COVID-19 virus we wanted to let you know what steps we are taking to keep clients, staff, volunteers and guests safe and healthy.

We hold our spaces to the highest standard of cleanliness year-round and are reviewing information from Health Canada and AHS regularly to ensure we are meeting or exceeding their standards. Considering increased concerns, we have also introduced some additional measures:

  • Additional sanitizing materials throughout the building.
  • Increased cleaning in Client Services and the warehouse
  • We have worked with our office cleaning vendor to increase cleaning of high-touch areas such as doorknobs.
  • We continue to communicate and demonstrate best hygiene practices to all.
  • We are reviewing client service options to ensure we continue to provide a comfortable hamper pick up experience

We are monitoring this rapidly evolving situation including updates provided by the AHS and will continue to work to keep you safe and informed as we learn more. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, visit Alberta Health Services for more information.

Thank you for continuing to help so that our community can stay strong at this vulnerable time.
