Covid-19 Update

Keeping the Calgary Food Bank community healthy during COVID-19

May 13, 2020

The Calgary Food Bank had to quickly adjust to the new realities of the COVID-19 pandemic two months ago. Since then, we have continued to serve our community in a way that minimizes risk to the health and safety of our staff, volunteers and clients.

Out of commitment to our core value of health and safety, we will be maintaining our current processes even as Alberta moves forward with its relaunch plan. Drive-through hamper distribution and current scheduling protocols for volunteering and hamper pickup will be in effect until further notice.

IMPROVING EMERGENCY FOOD HAMPER ACCESSIBILITY

Clients can now validate their identification online, minimizing risk during hamper pickup (fewer physical objects exchanged and less contact required), as well as making it easy for a third party to pick up a hamper on a client’s behalf. Clients can securely upload their ID, have it validated by Food Bank staff, and then receive a QR code to share with the person picking up their hamper. The individual picking up the hamper no longer has to produce original ID for everyone in the household or bring an authorization letter from the client. This new process protects client privacy and the safety of everyone at the Food Bank, while still letting us ensure that the correct people in a household are receiving food. Identification is deleted from our system once validated.

We have also adjusted client eligibility for subsequent hampers; clients now only need to wait 10 days between hamper requests. If you’re unsure whether you qualify for a hamper, please call our request line.

EMERGENCY FOOD HAMPERS – 403-253-2055

Need Food? Our Hamper Request line is open. You must call first as emergency hamper distribution is by appointment only; please call 403-253-2055. Please be patient and try again if your call is disconnected. If you arrive without an appointment, you may be asked to exit the line, call the hamper request line and return at your assigned time.

Ourr main location uses a drive-through model for hamper distribution. Please follow all traffic instructions and ensure you have room in your vehicle, ideally your trunk, for your hamper. If you do not have a vehicle, please let our volunteers know when you phone us. Calgary Transit Route 30 goes to our main location; please check online for the current schedule.

Some of our satellite locations are open for hamper distribution. These locations are not drive-through, but social distancing and other protocols have been implemented.

VOLUNTEERING

In order to reduce the risk of illness in our facilities, we are limiting volunteers to one shift each per week. Currently all our volunteer shifts are full, but we may add new shift times and roles as needed. If you have registered to volunteer but there are no shifts available right now, keep your eye on your email for any future volunteer opportunities. A huge thank you to everyone who has donated their time!

DONATIONS

Wcontinue to experience high demand and a great need for food and funds. There are a variety of ways that you can help feed YYC:

  • We are regularly picking up donations from our grocery partners. If you are grocery shopping, please consider picking up some extra items and leaving them in the donation bin in the store. Our most needed items can be found on our wish list.
  • Donated funds help us purchase essential hamper items. We ask that donations be made online or over the phone rather than in person at our facility.
  • Many local businesses are donating proceeds from sales and running virtual food drives to support us. We often highlight these on our social media, so connect with us on InstagramFacebookTwitter and LinkedIn to keep up with all our updates!

Thank you to everyone who is helping us serve the community through this difficult and uncertain time, however long it may last. We couldn’t be more grateful to be community owned and community supported!

COVID-19 UPDATES

PAST UPDATES

April 28, 2020

The Calgary Food Bank continues to serve the community while minimizing risks to health and safety for our staff, volunteers and clients. Our Emergency Food Hamper program continues to operate as we try to offer even more fresh and non-perishable items, and we’ve developed a new ordering and pickup model for our Food Link program, which provides food to partner agencies who help our most vulnerable populationsThis situation continues to change, and we don’t know when we will be able to start to return to our normal ways of operating, but we are up to the challenge.

And Calgarians have also risen to the challenge – we’ve been floored by the generosity of our community over the past month. Together, we can feed YYC through this pandemic and beyond!

EMERGENCY FOOD HAMPERS – 403-253-2055

We are working hard to bring our clients a variety of fresh and non-perishable foods in our Emergency Food HampersWe appreciate your patience as we make sure we can feed YYC with our resources of staff, volunteers and food during this ever-changing situation.

Need Food? Our Hamper Request line is open. You must call first as emergency hamper distribution is by appointment only; please call 403-253-2055. Please be patient and try again if your call is disconnected. If you arrive without an appointment, you may be asked to exit the line, call the hamper request line and return at your assigned time.

We have implemented a drive-through model for hamper pick-up at our main location. Please follow all traffic instructions and ensure you have room in your vehicle, ideally your trunk, for your hamper. If you do not have a vehicle, please let our volunteers know when you phone usCalgary Transit Route 30 runs directly behind our building at 46 Avenue and 12A Street SE; please check online for the most current bus times.

We have also reopened some of our satellite locations for hamper distributionThese locations are not drive-through, but social distancing and other protocols have been implemented.

VOLUNTEERING

In order to reduce the risk of illness in our facilities, we made the decision in March to limit volunteers to one shift each per week. This meant that we needed 670 individuals per week to fill all our volunteer shifts, all while missing our senior volunteers, who make up a large part of our volunteer base and have been cheering us on from home. And Calgary stepped up, filling each and every one of our volunteer spots – thank you!

We are continually evaluating our processes and volunteer needs, so we are adding new shift times and roles as needed. Learn more about how you can get involved!

DONATIONS

We could not be more grateful for the flood of donations we have received since this pandemic began. However, we continue to experience increased demand and the need for food and funds is still great. There are a variety of ways that you can help feed YYC:

  • We are regularly picking up donations from our grocery partners. If you are grocery shopping, please consider picking up some extra items and leaving them in the donation bin in the store. Our most needed items can be found on our wish list.
  • Donating funds will ensure that we can purchase essential hamper items. We ask that donations be made online or over the phone at this time and that you postpone any visits to our facility.
  • Many local businesses are donating proceeds from sales, running virtual food drives and more to benefit the Calgary Food Bank. We often highlight these on our social media, so be sure to connect with us on InstagramFacebookTwitter and LinkedIn to keep up with all our updates!

Again, a huge thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you have done to help us serve our community during this incredibly challenging time. We will get through this together!

March 23, 2020

FOOD LINK

We are now moving to an order and pick-up model of food and supplies distribution. Here are some updates on the new distribution model:

  • We are working with limited staff, volunteers and resources at this time, to keep our facility safe and continue service delivery, therefore a limited number of agencies have been contacted, primarily those with certified industrial kitchens and who are cooking for their resident clients.
  • Selected agencies/programs will be contacted to notify them when they can access the Food Link Program with this new distribution model
  • Please continue to bear with us as we work through this challenge. We know that you may have many questions and concerns. Please do not hesitate to contact us with your questions using the agency line at 403-640-8810 or the Food Link team members at 403-253-2059 extension 227 or extension 230.

March 12, 2020

As Calgary experiences increased concerns regarding COVID-19 virus we wanted to let you know what steps we are taking to keep clients, staff, volunteers and guests safe and healthy.

We hold our spaces to the highest standard of cleanliness year-round and are reviewing information from Health Canada and AHS regularly to ensure we are meeting or exceeding their standards. Considering increased concerns, we have also introduced some additional measures:

  • Additional sanitizing materials throughout the building.
  • Increased cleaning in Client Services and the warehouse
  • We have worked with our office cleaning vendor to increase cleaning of high-touch areas such as doorknobs.
  • We continue to communicate and demonstrate best hygiene practices to all.
  • We are reviewing client service options to ensure we continue to provide a comfortable hamper pick up experience

We are monitoring this rapidly evolving situation including updates provided by the AHS and will continue to work to keep you safe and informed as we learn more. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, visit Alberta Health Services for more information.

Thank you for continuing to help so that our community can stay strong at this vulnerable time.

Food security in times of crisis

Food security in times of crisis

What is highlighted in times of disaster – be it fire, flood or pandemic – is that food needs to be part of the response; unfortunately, it is rarely considered. Policy around food does not engage with the established food service charities providing the stop gap. Food banks and food service organizations are experts in the implementation of food safety, public health and social wellbeing. We advocate for change and client security in the long run.
